Introduction
In association with our sponsors, the Northern Rivers Urban Design Initiative has pleasure in anouncing the second Northern Rivers Design Awards. The Awards seek to:


° Foster excellence within the Urban Design industry;

°
Recognise design professionals who contribute positively to our region's built environment;

° 
Educate our community to appreciate and demand quality urban design; and

°
Celebrate the special character of our region.

Categories
Awards are given in 3 categories - Commercial, Government/Community and a new award category of Villages.

Environmental management and design firm GeoLINK are offering a complimentary service to those groups intrerested in nominating for the new Villages category. Judging Criteria
The general criteria for prize assessment are the matters listed below.

1.         Design excellence;
2.         Functional quality;
3.         Innovative design or demonstration of a new direction;
4.         Consistent and complete expression of concept;
5.         Sensitivity to cultural, historical, physical and natural context;
6.         Environmental responsibility and sustainability;
7.         Promotion of bio-diversity and supporting local ecosystems; and
8.       Provision of value for money.

Eligibility
Any organisation administering a project which is located in the Northern Rivers Region (see web site map) of NSW may nominate. The project can be a recent construction work or it can be a project, concept or strategy recently approved for implementation.

Award Allocations
In each category, Commercial, Government/Community and Villages the Jury may allocate the following Awards:

Excellence – 1

Merit – maximum of 3

The number, if any, of merit awards will be determined by the Jury.

Awards Ceremony
The Mayne investments 2005 Urban Design Awards Ceremony at Byron at Byron Resort, Broken Head Road Byron Bay, from 5.00 - 7.00pm on Thursday 18th August. Tickets to the event are $40.00 and includes drinks canapés. For further information about this special event telephone 66872378.

Conditions of Entry
1. Projects nominated must be sited in the Northern Rivers Region of NSW (see web site map).

2. Each nomination is to include a declaration stating the persons involved in the project.

3. The Award sponsors reserve the right to retain all entries and their images (indefinitely) and to publish both in hard copy and on-line except where an entrant requests that such information should not be published.

4. Residential project nominations must relate to projects involving 4 or more dwellings (or suites) and commercial projects involving greater than 500 m2 floor space.

5. If a “concept” is submitted and that application relates to a “development”, then the development must have a SEPP 71 Master Plan or DA approval.

6.
Images submitted may be used during the Awards Ceremony.

7. An entry fee of $140 is to accompany each project Award nomination.

8. Should a dispute arise regarding non-judging issues (such as entry eligibility) the Chair of the North Coast Division of the Planning Institute of Australia (or nominees) shall determine the outcome.

9.
The decision of the Jury is final with respect to all Awards.

Media Coverage of Award Recipients
The Northern Rivers Urban Design Awards consider it advantageous to entrants and the Northern Rivers design community in general to publicise our winners widely. As such, we have an extensive public relations program that provides national and local (Northern Rivers) media coverage of our winners. 2004 winners received extensive profile in Northern Rivers media as well as such national publications as Architecture Australia, Indesign and Urban Design Forum.

As soon as they are received, entries will be displayed on the Design Awards web site and will also be sent to Northern Rivers media. Media may contact entrants direct for quotes or alternative photographs. Following the Awards Ceremony Northern River media will profile Award Winners as well as the Ceremony event in general.

Entry Documentation and Other Requirements
Each entry must include an accompanying project summary sheet, supporting text, images in digital format (no slides) and a nomination form. Entries are to be submitted on CD as a single unsecured PDF format file. The file must be a maximum size of 1.5 mg. No plans, exhibition documents or the like are to be submitted other than in digital form. The CD must include the project summary. The images and text should be prepared ready for both downloading from the web site and for screening at the Awards Ceremony in large screen format. The presentation must contain all images with necessary captions and other relevant text.

A project summary is to be included on the form provided. This must include background and general information regarding the entry which allows the Jury to fully appreciate the detail of the project and its content. The summary should not exceed 1,000 words and shall include:

° the project name;
° a brief outline of the scope of the work, concept or strategy;
° the significance of the project;
° roles of those involved;
° important special factors which may make this project unique or unusual;
° application of sustainability principles;
° unusual or interesting facts appropriate for publicity purposes; and
° the project budget.

Proponent Statement
All entries are to have a signed proponent statement supporting the submission as part of the “nomination form”.
